Two months at the Hope House

Marie Clausen

Today marks two months of my stay in India at the Hope House. So far I’ve made rememberable experiences, many in the Hope House, but also outside, discovering India.

Starting with the food that I adore so much—I don’t even want to think about going back to Germany and not getting to eat Biryani and Chapati (my favorite food here) every week!

I made a promise to myself that before I leave the Hope House, I’ll ask the kitchen staff whether I can join the cooking process at least once, so that I might be able to continue cooking original Indian food in Germany—in memory of my time in India.

The Hope House girls and I have already created some memories that I will probably never forget. Dancing and singing together in the rain—the first since my arrival, physical activities and games that often made us laugh a lot, as well as our craftwork projects (where the girls really impressed me with their talent for creativity).

I also learned a lot from the children by now.. They showed me how to fry chapati, how to eat with hands in the right way, and taught me some Tamil. Even though I only know a few words, I realized that it already makes a big difference. From time to time I am able to understand the content of a conversation, but it especially helps me to communicate and talk to the babies in the adoption agency.

Since local transport in Tamil Nadu is pretty well developed, I quickly found my way around and oriented myself. I am particularly impressed by the pink buses in Tamil Nadu, as they are free for women. A great innovation in my opinion, as it provides mobility and independence for female travelers in a safe way.

Speaking of travelling, one of my highlights so far was my journey to Kerala. Kerala has once again demonstrated the diversity of India in a special way to me. I spend three days in Alappuzha, visiting the beautiful beach and eating a lot of tasty pineapple:). Five hours after my departure, I arrived in the town of Munnar, confused by a rapid drop in temperature and surrounded by mountains, nature, and peaceful silence. I remember drinking the best chai so far at a hill station and being fascinated by how one state alone can offer so much diversity and variety.

This trip made me want to see even more of India and immerse myself in Indian culture, but also experience everyday life at the Hope House even more intensively. By now I found a lot of fulfillment in being here, spending time with the babies and children, as they bring so much life and atmosphere into everyday life at the NGO. I really appreciate being a part of it for those 6 months, and I’m excited for the next weeks coming up!
